Pairing EV charging with solar and storage

Charging, generation and storage compete for the same connection. Designed together they solve each other's problems; designed separately they create them.
They share one constraint
Solar, storage and charge points all sit behind the same incoming supply. Add chargers without accounting for future generation and you may consume the headroom your solar connection needed. Install solar without planning for charging and you will be back to the DNO twice.
A single capacity plan covering all three, even if delivery is phased over several years, avoids paying for the same civils and applications twice.
Charging is an ideal solar load
Workplace charging happens during exactly the hours solar generates. Cars arriving in the morning and leaving in the evening are a flexible daytime load that can be throttled to absorb generation rather than importing.
This is the strongest self-consumption pairing available to most commercial sites, and it improves the business case for both the array and the chargers.
Where storage earns its place
A battery buffers two different problems. It moves midday generation into evening charging demand, and it shaves the peak that a bank of chargers would otherwise impose on your supply. The second role sometimes justifies storage on its own, by deferring a supply upgrade that would cost more than the battery.
Sequencing a phased build
Install ducting and containment for the full eventual scheme in the first phase, while the ground is already open. Size switchgear and any new board for the end state rather than the first tranche. Then add generation, storage and sockets as demand and capital allow. The incremental cost of future-proofing at phase one is small; the cost of retrofitting it is not.
